Please join us for an examination of the history, meaning and making of Japanese Tea Bowls (Chawans). These classic shapes are the centerpiece of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Their shape and aesthetic has accompanied the evolution of Japanese ceramics for centuries and have later had a strong impact on many American potters.

This will be a three-part series:

Two free 30 minute (with time afterwards for questions) online lectures February 18 and February 22 at 12:30pm.

The in-person workshop will be on March 9th from 12:30–4:30 pm.

The online lectures and workshop will be led by Nessim Cohen, a ceramist and art critic specializing in the history of Japanese ceramics, tea wares, and tea ceremony.

The first lecture, on Friday, February 18th, 12:30pm, will be about the origin of the tea bowl (chawan) and the Raku family, the first dynasty of ceramists dedicated to the making of chawans for the Japanese tea ceremony.

The second lecture, on Tuesday, February 22nd, 12:30pm, will be about Wabisabi, the philosophy and aesthetic movement behind the technique of making raku tea bowls.

On March 9th, Nessim will be teaching the art of creating ceramic tea bowls. An accomplished ceramicist, he will demonstrate and describe several traditional approaches to hand building these classic forms before assisting the participants in making their own tea bowls. ($100/participants. $15/piece for us to bisque fire).

While one session will follow logically from the one or ones before, you need not sign up for all.

We invite you to join us and discover how to make your own teabowls.

Precious metal clay, or silver clay, is made of pure silver mixed with water and an organic binding agent. You can mold it into an endless number of shapes and designs. When fired, the binding agent burns off, resulting in original fine silver jewelry—99.9% pure.

Learn the basics of how to work with silver clay in our introductory workshop. This 3 hour session covers rolling, stamping, and other methods of creating texture and all the finishing techniques you will need.

Pieces will be fired during the workshop, so you can wear your creations home that day or give them away for the perfect holiday gift!

The price of the workshop is $90 (cost of clay not included). Precious metal clay can be purchased at Mud Matters ($50 for 15g and $75 for 25g packet). No refunds or rescheduling within 3 days of workshop date. No refunds/credits once a workshop has happened. Participants must be 18 or older.

Come spend an evening in the company of Michael Fullwood, an expert floral designer.

Michael has a unique skill of enhancing vases and vessels of any size or design with just the right combination of flowers and other greenery. He has designed many shows and large exhibitions, including floral design at The Clinton White House and in the lobby of the Metropolitan Museum.

The evening will utilize fresh, seasonal flowers and ceramic vases. You are welcome to bring your own or purchase a vase from our gallery.

Through lecture, demonstration and hands-on assistance, Michael will walk us through key considerations in floral design and display, particularly related to ceramic containers. Spend an enjoyable evening in our studio and go home with a beautiful floral arrangement just in time for Mother's Day.

Bring your favorite ceramic vase, between 5" and 9" in height. (Mugs or small teapots are perfect if you do not have a suitable sized vase.) There will be plenty of vases for purchase in our gallery as well.

The $90 includes all flowers and floral supplies. It will cost $25 for flowers for each additional vase or pot, as our flower supplies last.

Wine and refreshments will be served.
